This article is being written to conclude and recap my series on the question of “when do Las Vegas, Nevada child custody orders end?” I considered it important to write on this topic as it is a subject which often causes confusion between parents. This confusion can lead to unnecessary conflict. I wrote this series, therefore, with the goal of providing information which will help people to better understand their particular set of circumstances. It has also been my goal to provide information which will assist with the selection of an attorney. If you need assistance then contact my office today to speak with a lawyer.
I addressed a number of topics over my recent articles. Issues which I analyzed include the following:
- Nevada child custody agreements do not end until the child is 18 or emancipated
- How the child’s age and wishes impact a visitation order
- How Courts rule on visitation in cases involving older children
- Why parents should retain a child custody attorney
These particular topics were addressed for several reasons. First, many parents make the mistake of thinking that a child can choose their arrangements once they reach a certain age or grade level. This is not the case. Also, requirements for visitation and the payment of support will remain in place. Second, Clark County Family Court judges will consider the age and wishes of a child, but these factors are not determinative by themselves. Third, in a case involving older children, the Court may grant “teenage discretion.” There are limitations on such discretion. Finally, having qualified counsel can help to ensure that the matter is handled correctly and that conflict is minimized.
A point I stressed throughout this series is that one should retain counsel as soon as possible for any type of family law dispute. Having counsel can help ensure that disputes are being handled through the proper channels. This is better than back-and-forth arguing between the parents. Such conduct can a) be detrimental to the child and b) hurt one’s ability to present a strong case in court. By having quality representation, a parent can protect their rights and the child’s best interests.
