parents talking in front of childThis post is being written to finalize and recap my discussion on what happens at the first hearing in a Las Vegas, Nevada child custody case. I decided to write on this issue as parents are often unsure of what they should expect from the process. Parents may also have unreasonable expectations as to how quickly a matter will resolve. I wrote my previous articles with the goal of addressing common misunderstandings. An experienced attorney can assist you with understanding what to expect from the process. If you find yourself in need of assistance then contact my office online or by telephone to speak with a lawyer.

I addressed several topics over my recent articles. Issues which I analyzed included the following:

There are several reasons why I chose to address these particular topics. First, a hearing to establish a “temporary order” is often the first time the case will come before the Court. Parents should understand that such a hearing is not a trial and it will typically consist only of oral argument. Second, when paternity has not been established then the Court will typically require genetic testing before any other issues may be considered. Third, when the parents are not married, but paternity has not been established, then a temporary custody and visitation arrangement will typically be put in place. Fourth, when the matter involves married parents then the Court will also typically rule on issues such as spousal support and possession of the marital residence. Finally, if the parents do not follow the Court’s initial orders then they will likely find themselves back before the judge rather quickly.

If you are involved in a family law dispute then it is strongly advised that you retain an experienced attorney to represent you throughout the process. Counsel will file your initial Motions and will represent you at the initial hearing as well as throughout all proceedings. Having representation when appearing in Court is an important step towards ensuring that your case is handled correctly. As a Las Vegas child custody lawyer, I am able to assist with such matters.
